A Volta Ciclista a Catalunya with a global impact

The 99th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, which ended on March 31st with the final victory of the Colombian Miguel Ángel López (Astana) and with some top-level stage winners, had some remarkable media impact figures. The “Volta” was broadcasted on TV throughout the world with more than 4,000 hours of television broadcasting.

At a global level, the data extracted from the Nielsen agency indicate that the Volta had 4,370 hours of television broadcasting, through 28 international broadcasters that reached 190 countries around the world, with live broadcast on the 5 continents. This year, countries such as Australia, Mexico or Canada were added to the live broadcast.

In the European territory, the Eurosport channel achieved with the "Volta" figures of 16.4 million unique viewers, through a total of 98 broadcast hours in the 54 territories where it operates. Among the five countries with the most return we find Spain, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

The television broadcast of the "Volta" is one of its strongest points, but the impact on other types of media is also very important. According to the agency Kantarmedia, the "Volta" had an economic impact on media of 14.7 million euros in Spain, with more than 2,000 news generated around the race.

On the ground, a total of 171 journalists and photographers were accredited during the seven stages of the "Volta" in its 99th edition, starting in Calella and ending in Barcelona, ​​and returning to towns such as Sant Feliu de Guíxols or Puigcerdà, among other.

The caravan of the "Volta", including the cyclists, staff of the teams, organization and media, had more than 5,500 overnight stays during the week of competition.

On a digital level, the "Volta" continues to progress. This year 2019 the race premiered a new website and the improvement in the results was evident. During the "Volta" more than 1,600,000 pages were visited on the web (23% more than in 2018), with 220,000 unique visitors.

The great digital increase of the race has been reflected in the visualizations of videos on social networks, where the "Volta" has more than 60,000 followers among Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The videos exceeded 850,000 visualizations multiplying the results of 2018 by four.

Cyclists such as the world champion, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), or the four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome (Team Ineos), rode in the race. The final pòdium was for Miguel Ángel López (Astana), Adam Yates ( Mitchelton - Scott) and Egan Bernal (Team Ineos). The "Volta" is already preparing its 100th edition in the year 2020.
