El Berguedà will once again support the Volta a Catalunya next 2026

May 14 th 2025 - 11:00 [GMT + 2]

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will once again experience a major mountain stage in Berguedà in its 2026 edition. After two consecutive years of Berga's presence on the route of the Catalan UCI World Tour race, the City Council and the Consell Comarcal del Berguedà have reaffirmed their commitment to the organization to repeat the formula of success that impressed the cycling world with a great sporting and public spectacle, to relive a decisive stage of the Catalan race with the best cyclists in the world, in March next season.

After the great success of the 2024 season, with a memorable display by Tadej Pogačar on a spectacular day between Berga and Queralt and the premiere of the Coll de Pradell in competition, and a new bid for a big stage planned for 2025 that did not go as planned, the Volta a Catalunya is once again working on a big stage in the Berguedà region for its 105th edition, to be held in March 2026.

Expectations were high one more year for the last edition this 2025, which finally had to be disputed a short stage through the Baix Berguedà with start and finish in the city of Berga, due to the extreme wind conditions that was resolved with victory of the American Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek). After this bittersweet day for all involved, both the Volta a Catalunya and the Ajuntament de Berga and the Consell Comarcal del Berguedà make official their commitment to return to live a great mountain stage for next season in the territory of Berguedà.

This news reaffirms a convinced commitment to the Volta by the local authorities for the third consecutive year, demonstrating the medium and long-term commitment of the Berguedà region to cycling and cycle tourism. In fact, the 2nd women's edition of the Volta a Catalunya to be held from 6 to 8 June will also feature a major mountain stage through Berguedà territory, starting in Bagà and finishing in the spectacular Coll de Pal, in a collaboration in which the options are also open for continuity in the future.

Ivan Sànchez, Mayor of Berga, said that "we are happy to repeat the link with the Volta and we believe that we deserve to live a third edition to get rid of the thorn of this year's stage. Despite the difficulties experienced during the day, we would like to thank the organizers for their efforts. The success of the public and the involvement of the administrations, the entities and the region for cycling, as hosting the stage serves as a showcase for us to the world". Sánchez added that "as for the women's Volta in June, despite the fact that it does not pass through our municipality, we will make every effort to ensure that it takes place in our town, we will make every effort to ensure that what is experienced in Bagà and Coll de Pal is similar to what was experienced in the men's stages held so far, and we open the door to hosting the event next year.

For his part, Moisès Masanas, president of the Consell Comarcal del Berguedà, added "in this past edition of 2025, the weather did not allow us to do the stage that the organization and the territory had planned in Berguedà, and at this point we want to thank the efforts of the organization to carry out a stage in complicated wind conditions, this fact has led us to decide to do a new stage in our region in 2026. We have a firm idea, this is to make Berguedà a region where lovers of cycling in all its forms can find their space, we know that we have a region with a fantastic potential to enjoy it and we want to put it in the showcase. A great showcase is the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, and that's why we want to have the men's and women's Volta at home, because we believe that both the territory and the race are winners.

The Consell Comarcal works hand in hand with the town councils of Berguedà, with those who have departure and arrival, also with those who are passing through the race, because the effort that represents that local roads with few municipal resources are ready is a challenge that the councils take with great enthusiasm. Now that we have consolidated that in 2026, we will have the men's Volta, we are at the disposal of the territory to make a great day of the women's Volta, which will take place in stage 2, starting in Bagà and finishing in Coll de Pal on 7 June.

Rubèn Peris, General Director of the Volta a Catalunya thanked the local institutions for their support "both the Berguedà and the Volta a Catalunya deserve to live one more year a stage to remember for all the fans, and that's why we are very pleased with the agreement to repeat the presence of the region and its mountains in the Volta next season. I would like to personally thank the City Council and the Consell Comarcal for the support we have always received in this year's edition, and we are convinced that we can once again experience a day of cycling to remember, which will once again carry the images of the Volta and the county around the world".

The Volta a Catalunya will celebrate its 105th edition next season in 2026, consolidated one more year in the UCI WorldTour calendar, which guarantees the participation of the best cyclists in the world. Slovenians Primož Roglič (2025 and 2023) and Tadej Pogačar (2024) are the latest winners of the oldest stage race on the world circuit after the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, where the great cyclists of their era continue to shine.
