El millor de l'etapa / Best of stage 7. Volta Catalunya 2026

(Barcelona, 29-03-2026).- Brady Gilmore (NSN Cycling Team) has won the final stage of the 2026 Volta a Catalunya, a 95.1-kilometre route starting and finishing in Barcelona, with the highlight being the seven climbs up the Alt del Castell de Montjuïc. The Australian secured his team’s second victory of the week, following Ethan Vernon’s win in Camprodon on the day Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) was crowned champion of the 105th edition of the Catalan cycling race. The Dane withstood the attacks on the final circuit with ease and took to the podium alongside Frenchman Lenny Martínez (Bahrain Victorious) and German Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).

On Sunday 29 March, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) became the first Dane in history to win the Volta a Catalunya in its 105-year history. A two-time Tour de France winner, Vingegaard follows in the footsteps of Tadej Pogačar (2024) and Primož Roglič (2023 and 2025) in the Catalan race’s impressive recent roll of honour, with a victory secured thanks to his wins on the mountain finishes at La Molina/Coll de Pal and Queralt, where he built up a lead that he defended resolutely today in the ever-explosive final stage in Barcelona.

After setting off from Plaza de Espanya, a breakaway group featuring Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility), stage winner at Banyoles, Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Darren Rafferty (EF Education-EasyPost), Einer Rubio (Movistar Team) and Liam Slock (Lotto-Intermarché) broke away in the opening kilometres of the route through the Baix Llobregat before returning to the Montjuïc circuit.

There, the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team sought to up the pace of the leading group until Remco Evenepoel launched his first attack on the third of the seven ascents of the Alt del Castell. However, neither the breakaway attempts by the Belgian – stage winner in Barcelona in 2023 – nor those by other adventurers such as Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) or Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), winner of the mountains classification, prevented the final stage from being decided by a select group.

The sprint victory on Avenida Maria Cristina was ultimately claimed by the 24-year-old Australian Brady Gilmore (NSN Cycling Team), who secured his first WorldTour win and his team’s second victory of the week. He did so by beating Frenchman Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers), a two-time stage winner in this Volta and winner of the points classification, and Remco Evenepoel himself.

With this result, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) has secured victory in the general classification of the Volta a Catalunya, finishing 1’22” ahead of Frenchman Lenny Martínez (Bahrain Victorious), who was crowned best young rider in the Catalan race for the second time at just 22 years of age, and 1’30” ahead of Germany’s Florian Lipowitz (Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), ahead of Remco Evenepoel who finished 5th.

Another renowned champion has been added to the Volta a Catalunya’s roll of honour, which now officially counts an eighth Tour de France winner among its ranks, following in the footsteps of Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Luis Ocaña, Felice Gimondi, Bernard Thévenet, Miguel Indurain and Tadej Pogačar.
