Miguel Ángel López will defend in the 100th edition of the “Volta” his status as a current winner of the race

Miguel Ángel López will be one of the great names that will compete between March 23 and 29, 2020 in the edition 100 of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. Astana Pro Team has confirmed to the organization that the Colombian cyclist will defend his status as the current winner of the event.

With only 25 years, Miguel Ángel López managed his victory in the overall qualification of the last "Volta" in the fourth stage, that began in Llanars and ended in La Molina. The Colombian was the strongest in the fight between the favorites that was triggered in the second and final ascent to the port. His attack eight kilometers to the arrival allowed him to win the stage victory and move to command the overall qualification. López wore the white and green jersey of the leader of the "Volta" until the end of the race, but he had to make a final effort to respond to the attacks of Nairo Quintana and Adam Yates in the last stage, in Barcelona. Finally "Superman" López was accompanied on the podium by Adam Yates (second) and Egan Bernal (third).

The victory in the "Volta" stands out in the 2019 season of Miguel Ángel López, in which he has established himself among the best young values ​​of the international cycling. The Astana rider also won the Tour of Colombia, in addition to signing a meritorious performance in the Giro (seventh) and the Vuelta (fifth).

The presence of "Superman" López in the "Volta" reflects the ability of the event, included in the UCI Wold Tour calendar, to attract the big stars of the international cycling. In 2019 the race had an excellent list of riders, among which Egan Bernal, winner of the last Tour; Richard Carapaz, winner of the Giro; Chris Froome, four-time Tour winner; Alejandro Valverde, Nairo Quintana, Adam and Simon Yates, Thibaut Pinot or Romain Bardet.
