Tarragona will have a start stage in the 100th edition of the “Volta”

The 100th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will have a start stage in the city of Tarragona, where the “Volta” does not had a prominent role since 2011.

The Tarragona town hall and the “Volta” organization have agree this new start that will be realized in the “Mediterranean Ring” of the city, in a very special edition that will take place from 23 to 29 march 2020.

The link between Tarragona and the “Volta” is historical, as it started in the first edition in year 1911, specifically with the first stage between Barcelona and Tarragona, in which won the cyclist Sebastià Masdeu.

The next day, the second stage was disputed between Tarragona and Lleida. Sebastià Masdeu was the first winner of the history in the “Volta Ciclista a Catalunya”, a cyclist  born in Tarragona with the nick of “Tarraco”, because of his place of birth. In total, Tarragona has been linked to the “Volta” in 56 occasions, with 28 arrival stages and 28 starts.

In Tarragona have won historical cyclists as Miquel Poblet (1952 and 1953), the Belgian Walter Godefroot (1966), the Italian Franco Bitossi (1970), Domingo Perurena (1971, 1972, 1973) or Miguel Indurain (1991).
