The 100th edition of the Volta will be held in March 2021

April 27 th 2020 - 11:10

The 100th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will finally be held in the last week of March 2021. After evaluating how the cycling calendar has turned out due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Volta of the centenary of editions will not take place this year 2020 in order to face it with the maximum guarantees in 2021.

"The absolute priority now is to fight the Covid-19 and avoid its spread. The cycling calendar that the UCI has made official has been reduced to practically three months, and we want to celebrate a 100th edition with the maximum guarantees and with the best world cyclists", commented the director of the Volta, Rubèn Peris.

The sports competition will not be allowed in the following months in Catalunya, and with a schedule where the Tour de France will be held in September, and later the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España, in addition to the five Monuments and the Cycling World Championship, the options for celebrating the Volta successfully are very limited.

"We are very clear that we do not want to do the Volta at any price. It would not make sense to do it coinciding with the Tour, the Giro or the Vuelta, competing for the best riders and the television audiences. We also did not consider organise it in a reduced format of days. We believe that the most appropriate option is to organise the race on our usual dates in 2021", confirmed Rubèn Peris.

"We have to be positive, and we are sure that the wait will be worth it. Although not doing it this 2020, next year it will continue to be the Volta of the centenary of editions, a very special anniversary"he added.

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya wishes to thank all involved parts for their understanding of this decision, especially institutions such as the Secretaria General de l’Esport and the Agència Catalana de Turisme, as well as the Provincial Councils and towns that are start or finish stages, with whom the Volta hopes to continue working for the 100 edition of the race.

We also want to thank the support of the sponsors, teams, riders and especially the public, who will have to wait longer to see such a special edition.

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, which organized its first edition in 1911, had been held without interruption since 1939, just after the Spanish Civil War. Now the race will have to face a small parenthesis to return stronger in 2021.
