Terres de l’Ebre, big protagonist in Volta 2023

October 17 th 2022 - 12:00

The stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya through Terres de l'Ebre, starting in Tortosa and finishing in Lo Port, will be one of the most attractive and decisive days of the 102nd edition of the race, which will take place from 20 to 26 March 2023 with the participation of the best teams in the world. The stage was presented today in Tortosa at an event with the President of the Tourist Board of the Tarragona Provincial Council and Mayoress of the city, Meritxell Roigé, and the President of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya Associació Esportiva, Rubèn Peris.

The aim of the stage is to show the territory of Terres de l'Ebre as a first-class cycling destination, and for this reason the organisation has devised an attractive stage starting in Tortosa and ending in one of the hardest mountains passes in Catalonia, Mont Caro, with the finish located at the viewpoint of El Portell. A spectacular pass with unique views of the Delta de l'Ebre.

The special category pass has a total distance of 8.4 kilometres, an average gradient of 9% and maximum gradients of 20%, and will be a decisive battle between the great favourites for the final victory of the Volta.

The only three precedents in Lo Port were in 1985, 1991 and 2017, with victories for Colombians Alirio Chizabas and Lucho Herrera, and on the last occasion for three-time Volta winner Alejandro Valverde. Tortosa will once again host a Volta start for the first time since 2017.

With 68 participations, the capital of Baix Ebre is one of the towns with the longest history in the Volta, although its presence is especially concentrated in the 40s, 50s and 60s. In fact, the 2017 and 2023 starts are the only two in this century.

For the president of the Tourist Board of the Tarragona Provincial Council and Mayoress of Tortosa, Meritxell Roigé, "hosting again a great cycling event such as the Tortosa - Lo Port stage of the Volta allows us to show Terres de l'Ebre as a unique destination for cycling with low-density roads, natural scenery and a changing orography. And not only this, we have the opportunity to show again to a global audience the Terres de l'Ebre and some of the main tourist assets that position us as one of the best sustainable destinations in the world".

"The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is a world showcase, and with this stage we want to show the full potential of Terres de l'Ebre, with the highlight being the arrival at Mont Caro, one of the hardest and most attractive mountains passes in Catalonia. I am sure that the riders will put on a magnificent show", said Rubèn Peris, who was very pleased to return to Terres de l'Ebre six years after the last finish at Lo Port in 2017.

At the official presentation will be explained the main details of a stage that will take place on Friday 24th March, and where is expected a massive presence of public, due to the large following and cycling fans in the area, who will be able to see the best riders up close.
