Sabadell will enjoy a Volta a Catalunya stage finish with the best cyclists in the world

March 16 th 2023 - 10:28 [GMT + 1]

Sabadell will host next Thursday 23 March a spectacular finish of the fourth stage of the 102nd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, a 188 kilometres route starting in the town of Llívia. The stage was presented this Thursday in the presence of the councillor for sports Laura Reyes, the councillor in charge of the City Projection and Tourism programme, Lluís Matas, and the president of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, Rubèn Peris.

A new edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will start next Monday, March 20, and this year it will have an exceptional participation. Among the confirmed riders are two top riders such as the reigning world champion Remco Evenepoel or the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, three-time winner of the Vuelta a España, as well as Tour de France winners such as Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas, who already know what it is like to be the final podium of the Catalan race.

After more than two decades - the Volta last came to Sabadell in 2001 - the city will have a stage finish that promises strong emotions. Entering the city along the Carretera de Prats de Lluçanès, the cyclists will turn onto Ronda Zamenhof until they face the final metres of the stage along the Eix Macià, where the finish line will be located.

After two high-mountain stages, the Volta will reach its fourth stage, where presumably the fastest riders will have a great opportunity to try for a stage victory, although the terrain could also favour a breakaway.

During the presentation of the stage, the councillor for Sports, Laura Reyes, highlighted that "Sabadell is a regular venue for first-class sporting events, but the fact that the city is the arrival of a stage of the Volta is extraordinary for two reasons. Firstly, because cycling, whether amateur or professional, is traditionally deeply rooted in Sabadell. And also because it is an event with great tradition and prestige in the international calendar and its projection is enormous".

On the other hand, the councillor Lluís Matas pointed out that "continuing with the objective of bringing events to Sabadell, the Volta is perfectly adapted to the aim of the City Projection and Tourism programme: to place Sabadell on the international sports map, to activate the local economics, and to have sport as one of the great assets of the city together with culture and business activity".

For his part, the president of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, Rubèn Peris, said that "Sabadell is a great cycling city, and the Volta will bring the best teams in the world to offer a world-class spectacle. We are sure that it will be a success with the public, in a particularly beautiful finish that can offer us a lot of emotions".

The Volta stage will also serve to conclude the centenary celebrations of the Union Ciclista a Sabadell. The history between Sabadell and the Volta began in 1946, with a stage won by Miquel Gual. Since then, the city has been the start or finish of a stage on 10 occasions, with outstanding performances, among others, such as Luis Ocaña's victory in an individual time trial in 1971, when the winner of the Tour added the Volta to his list of winners.

The 102nd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will be held from 20 to 26 March 2023 and the 18 best teams in the world, the UCI WorldTeams, and 7 guest teams from the UCI ProTeams category will take part. The Volta has a media coverage that reaches up to 190 countries, and with audience figures that only in Eurosport accumulated more than 11 million viewers.
