Coinciding with the centenary of the iconic Esports Ciclista Mataró, the city will host a stage start of the World Tour race and its women's race.

Mataró 24-10-2025- Mataró reaffirms its commitment to cycling and will once again host the Volta spectacle next March, an experience it will repeat three months later with the start of the women's race. A city with strong ties to the sport, Mataró has established itself as one of the most loyal supporters of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and wanted to celebrate the centenary of the founding of Esports Ciclista Mataró by doubling down on the Volta, a race with deep historical roots in the city. This commitment will also bring the women's race to the capital of the Maresme region for the first time, which will take place between 19 and 21 June.

In 2026, coinciding with the centenary of the founding of Esports Ciclista Mataró, the city will host a stage start for both the men's and women's Volta races. With a well-established cycling tradition, the capital of the Maresme region has always been committed to the Catalan race, and next March, the city wants to celebrate the centenary of one of the most deeply rooted sports organizations in the city with the presence of a great spectacle such as a stage start of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, for both men and women.

Proof of its commitment to the Catalan stage race is the fact that the city has hosted the race 17 times (between starts and finishes), making it a classic of the Volta over the last decade. On this occasion, the 18th time will be to welcome the teams and enjoy a morning with the best cyclists in the world and all the infrastructure that surrounds an international event of this magnitude. Mataró is a city that thrives on cycling, as demonstrated by its huge following for various disciplines, including track cycling, mountain biking, road cycling, etc. It hosts numerous championships in all categories throughout the year. Since 2010, there has been a cycling school that promotes sport and works to train young children.

Next March, Mataró will host a stage of the Volta for the ninth time. On previous occasions, the Camí de la Geganta has been the perfect setting to thrill local fans with one of the city's most deeply rooted sports, which has continued to thrill with the presence of the world's best teams and cyclists. Fans were able to enjoy the presence of world champion Tadej Pogacar in the 2024 edition, who went on to win the second stage between the capital of the Maresme and Vallter, and subsequently the overall victory in the race. Just one year earlier, the town had been able to enjoy other big names such as double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, winner of the 2025 and 2023 Volta.

As the finish line location, Mataró has been the scene of major events such as the victory in the 100th edition of the Catalan race, which was won by three-time world champion Peter Sagan. Previously, the city had thrilled to such prestigious winners in the history of cycling as Julián Berrendero (1943), Vicenç Iturat (1955), Luis Ocaña (1970) and Johan Van der Velde (1982).

Mataró will host a stage start of the women's race for the first time

The third edition of the women's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will take place between 19 and 21 June. This will be Mataró's debut as the starting point for the race, reinforcing its commitment to women's sport and cycling. This edition will bring the world's best cyclists to our region and boasts two world-renowned winners in its roll of honour: Marianne Vos (2024) and Demi Vollering (2025).

The mayor of Mataró, David Bote, says that “in the centenary year of Esports Ciclista Mataró, the city had to host a stage of La Volta Ciclista again to celebrate the historical tradition of this sport in Mataró. It is an honor and a privilege to host such a high-level event, and even more so to do so in both the men's and women's categories.”

Rubén Peris, president of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, highlighted the city's commitment to the Catalan race: "We are particularly delighted to have Mataró as one of the venues for the 105th edition of the race, just in the year that the city will be celebrating the centenary of such an important organization as Esports Ciclista Mataró. The people of Mataró have always welcomed us with open arms, demonstrating their love for this sport, and we are sure that next March we will experience a great spectacle that will be seen around the world, and afterwards, for the first time, the city will thrill to the best in women's cycling."

In recent years, the Volta Ciclista Catalunya has brought the world's best cyclists to our region. Riders who need no introduction, such as Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, have chosen the Catalan race for their international calendar. Next March, the Volta will celebrate its 105th edition between 23rd and 29th March. An edition that is in the process of finalizing its route, which we already know will feature Mataró as the starting point for one of the seven stages of the UCI World Tour event.
