The Costa Daurada will be the protagonist of a stage of the Volta, starting in Mont-roig del Camp and ending in Vila-seca

November 6 th 2025 - 11:00 [GMT + 1]

The municipality of Mont-roig del Camp will make its debut in the Catalan cycling race by hosting a stage start, and Vila-seca will once again host the event seven years later

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will feature a stage that will run entirely through the regions that make up the Costa Daurada. The route of the 105th edition of the Catalan World Tour will allow us to discover some of the hidden corners of this territory, with an unprecedented start from the municipality of Mont-roig, in Baix Camp. Vila-seca will host the end of the stage for the fifth time in its history.

Between 23 and 29 March 2026, the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will once again capture the attention of the global cycling world. The organisers of the Catalan race are currently finalising the details of this new edition to map out the final route of the event. The Costa Daurada will be represented in a spectacular stage through its territory. Mont-roig del Camp and Miami Platja will make their debut as Volta venues, while Vila-seca and La Pineda Platja, in the Tarragonès region, will welcome the race convoy for the ninth time in their history.

Both municipalities in Tarragona have been certified in cycle tourism by the Catalan Tourism Agency, a distinction that guarantees services specially adapted to the needs of groups of cyclists who want to enjoy this sport. With over 14,000 inhabitants, Mont-roig del Camp's population is spread between the historic town centre inland, the coastal town of Miami Platja, and more than 20 residential developments. With more than 12 km of coastline, its privileged location between the sea and the mountains makes it an unbeatable place for outdoor sports, hiking, mountain biking, and water sports.

Crowned by the spectacular natural viewpoint of the Virgen de la Roca chapel, it offers an unbeatable view of the Camp de Tarragona plain. This setting, which was a source of inspiration for the painter Joan Miró, will host the start of one of the stages of the race, bringing all the logistical infrastructure that a race of this size entails to the town of Baix Camp. The public will be able to see the world's best cyclists up close at the team presentation and enjoy the spectacle of a top-level international race. The area has become an emerging paradise for cycling enthusiasts, thanks to its year-round favourable climate, quiet roads and beautiful landscapes. Mont-roig del Camp and Miami Platja can also boast a fully operational velodrome. The Josep Florencio Municipal Velodrome hosts numerous championships throughout the year and is also the training base for many local enthusiasts.

For its part, Vila-seca, La Pineda Platja will host the Volta for the ninth time in its history. So far, it has been the starting point on four occasions, while on four other occasions it has hosted a stage finish.

The last time the Volta visited Vila-seca was in 2019, at the end of a stage linking Valls with the Tarragona municipality. That stage was won by Australian cyclist Michael Matthews, who has numerous stage victories to his name in the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a España and Volta a Catalunya, among others. Other winners include Spain's Oscar Laguna (2001), while in 2003 (time trial between Salou and Vila-seca), victory went to the ONCE-Eroski team.

Vila-seca, with over 23,000 inhabitants, is one of the main tourist and cultural centres in southern Catalonia. Located in the heart of the Costa Daurada, it combines first-class leisure and services with a rich historical and cultural heritage. La Pineda Beach, with its long promenade and extensive fine sandy beach, is a benchmark for family and sustainable tourism. The municipality is also notable for its Cultural Park, which comprises three important venues: the Josep Carreras Auditorium, a meeting point for classical and contemporary music; the ‘Celler’ de Vila-seca, a 20th-century gem and heritage interpretation centre with a regular cultural programme; and Vila-seca Castle, now converted into a space for exhibitions and cultural activities.

Added to all this is PortAventura World, one of Europe's leading leisure complexes, which consolidates Vila-seca as a top international tourist destination. A city that combines culture, heritage, sea and fun, and which will once again host the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya with its characteristic hospitality and enthusiasm. The last edition of the Catalan race featured a stage held entirely in the Terres de l'Ebre region. Starting in the municipality of Paüls and finishing in the capital of Montsià, we experienced a windy day where victory was decided in a final sprint, much to the delight of the Amposta crowd.

In 2026, the world's best cyclists will move to the Costa Daurada region of Tarragona, where the spectacle is guaranteed. One of the most epic and exciting stages in recent years in the Volta was the one held in 2022 between Salou and Cambrils. A medium mountain stage covering almost 170 km along the Costa Daurada, where Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz and Colombian Sergio Higuita staged a memorable breakaway that turned the race classification on its head. It was a day when the rain made an appearance, adding even more drama to a stage that covered roads along the Costa Daurada in Prades, Coll de la Teixeta, Capafonts and La Mussara.

Located in southern Catalonia, the Costa Daurada boasts extensive, spectacular beaches and a mountainous interior, making it an ideal destination for visitors. The Roman civilisation's past is strongly felt in its capital, Tarragona, while Reus is the city with the most modernist buildings after Barcelona. The monasteries of Conca de Barberà, the castles and calçots (scallions) so characteristic of Alt Camp, the vineyards and spectacular landscape of the Serra de Montsant Natural Park in Priorat, with its numerous prestigious cycling passes, and the beaches and gastronomy of Baix Penedès are just some of the attractions.

The mayor of Mont-roig del Camp, Fran Morancho, emphasised that "we are very excited that the Volta is starting in our municipality. Cycling is part of our identity; we have a great fan base and an environment that invites you to enjoy it. The Josep Florencio Velodrome, named after one of our great cyclists, is a symbol of this passion, which is now being recognised by hosting the start of this stage of the Volta."

Pere Segura, Mayor of Vila-seca, emphasises that "Vila-seca is proud to once again be the setting for a stage finish of the Volta a Catalunya cycling race. Our municipality has always had close ties with sport, especially events that promote our region far and wide. Welcoming the world's best cyclists to our home is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the vitality and dynamism of Vila-seca and the entire Costa Daurada. We enjoy playing an active role in this major sporting and tourist showcase, which combines passion, effort and regional pride."

The president of the Tarragona Provincial Council Tourism Board, Enric Adell, emphasises that "the Tarragona region is a benchmark for sports tourism, particularly cycling. The fact that we are once again hosting a stage of a world-class competition such as the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is great news, with the Costa Daurada taking centre stage in 2026. The Costa Daurada has established itself as a leading destination in this field, thanks to its natural conditions, specialised offerings and quality infrastructure. Events such as this contribute to the international positioning of our region, to the deseasonalisation of tourism and to a better distribution of tourist activity throughout the region."

Rubèn Peris, The Director General of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya celebrated the Tarragona stage, which will continue from last year's stage in the Terres de l'Ebre region. "A few months ago, we enjoyed a stage between Paüls and Amposta, where we were able to take in the unique and beautiful landscapes of the Ebro Delta. I am convinced that next year we will experience a great stage on the Costa Daurada, where we have very fond memories of previous stages, not only because of the sporting spectacle they offered us, but also because of the beauty of the landscapes. We are also particularly pleased to have a new venue in the 105-year history of the race."

With the confirmation of this stage, the Tarragona region will be able to enjoy the spectacular spectacle of a UCI World Tour event such as the Volta. An infrastructure that brings together hundreds of people from the teams, organisers, riders, press from all over the world, etc. An event that will showcase some of the Costa Daurada's most beautiful spots to the entire planet thanks to the television broadcast of the Catalan race in 190 countries.
