Sant Feliu de Guíxols begins a special relationship with the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, which in its 101st edition will have its starting point in the Empordà town with a first stage starting and finishing in its streets, the beginning of a two-year agreement that also includes the 2023 edition. In 1993, Sant Feliu de Guíxols already hosted the first stage of the Volta, at that time an individual time trial won by the Italian Maurizio Fondriest ahead of Miguel Indurain. In total, it accumulates 20 appearances on the race route, the last of them being the finish of the second stage of the 2019 edition, resolved in a thrilling sprint won by the Australian Michael Matthews.
