Sort a stage start of the Volta a Catalunya for the first time, although it returns to the route 48 years after the last and only time it was a protagonist. The capital of Pallars Sobirà had hosted a finish in 1976, the 56th edition of the race, in a second stage starting from Almacelles that was won by Belgian Roger de Vlaeminck, one of the greatest cyclists in history with stage wins in the three grand tours and victories in the five Monuments.

With a territory of 105 km² and an altitude ranging from the 695 m of the Sort riverbank, crossed by the river Noguera Pallaresa, to the 2,909 m of the Mainera summit, in the peripheral area of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the municipality of Sort enjoys an extensive tradition in outdoor activities and the organisation of sporting events dating back to 1964 with the 1st International White Water Canoeing Rally.

Following this trajectory, Sort has hosted international championships, such as an stage finish in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in 1976 and a stage start in the Vuelta a España in 1999, 25 years ago.

In 2006, Sort obtained certification as a Sports Tourism Destination of Catalonia, a seal awarded to destinations with top quality facilities and services adapted to sporting activities, as well as a wide range of nature, cultural, adventure and gastronomic activities... to be enjoyed at any time of the year.

Capital of the Pallars Sobirà region, the town of Sort is a crossroads of old livestock trails and the N-260 and C-13 roads, where we find the iconic mountain passes of La Bonaigua and Cantó.
