On the centenary of Esport Ciclista Mataró, the local cycling club, the capital of Maresme will play a leading role in both the men's and women's editions of the Volta a Catalunya. A host city for starts and finishes in the history of the race, Mataró has been particularly well known in the modern era as the starting line, most recently in 2024 in a stage that also finished in Vallter, although the 2021 edition, the 100th Volta, is particularly memorable, as Mataró hosted a stage finish with victory for the three-time world champion Peter Sagan.
