November 16 th 2023 - 11:30 [GMT + 1]
The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya 2024 will have many new features, among them an unprecedented finish in Viladecans. It will be the first time in the 103 editions of the history of the Volta that the city of Baix Llobregat will host a finish of the race, where the best riders of the world will meet on March 18 and 24.
After the announcement of a finish in Queralt, the Volta a Catalunya confirms a new unpublished finish in its next edition thanks to the agreement between the Viladecans City Council and the race organiser.
The city of Baix Llobregat hosted in the last edition an intermediate sprint of the 7th stage, and next 2024 it will be much prominent with the confirmation as the city of a finish of the stages of the Catalan race, one of the most prestigious stage races of the world cycling calendar. Viladecans is a town in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona with around 67,000 inhabitants, making it the fourth most populated municipality in the Baix Llobregat region and one of the top twenty in Catalonia.
With a wide variety of geographical areas, from the beach to the mountains of the Massís del Garraf, as well as protected natural and agrarian areas, Viladecans is a town that invites you to enjoy and visit. A municipality that has not lost its spirit of the village it was half a century ago and that has developed an enterprising character to multiply its potential.
Apart from its links with the Volta, Viladecans has also enjoyed great successes linked to cycling in recent years, such as the achievement of paralympic medals and world titles by Sergio Garrote, one of the great symbols of today's adapted cycling.
Mayor Carles Ruiz explained that he is "very excited about this important event. Viladecans is a city committed to sport, mobility and sustainability, aspects that have been recognised by the European Union, which has named us the EU's green media capital, through the Green Leaf 2025 award. We believe in the practice of sport, which helps people's good health, and we believe in cycling, both for sport and leisure, or as a means of personal transport; that is why we have created 23 km of cycle lanes and 32.5 km of cycle street in the city. We hope that on the day of the arrival of the Volta everyone will come out to see the spectacle, whether they are fans or not, of all ages. Viladecans is more than ready to host a stage finish of the Volta, and will receive the race with the desire to do well and make it a great day of sporting celebration".
"We are very happy to be able to confirm a new finish in the long history of the Volta and to do it with Viladecans, which in recent years has shown its interest in the race. The Volta continues to open new doors and I am convinced that the inhabitants of Viladecans and all cycling fans will enjoy a great spectacle" assures Rubèn Peris, president of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya Associació Esportiva.
With this announcement, the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is now finalising the last details of the route for its 103rd edition, making it the stage race with the most editions on the world calendar after the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia. Fully consolidated in the UCI World Tour calendar, the Catalan race has the assured presence of the 18 best cycling teams in the world and an outstanding international media coverage.
The images of the finish in Viladecans will reach the whole world, thanks to the impact of an event that in its last edition had television coverage in up to 190 countries and the five continents, through 33 international broadcasters. Starting in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and finishing in Barcelona, the Volta will be looking for the winner of its 103rd edition from 18 to 24 March 2024, looking for the successor of the last winner, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic. The best riders in the world will return to Catalonia and will compete in Viladecans in one of the stages of a week of competition that is expected to be full of emotions.
